From the most recent census of 2011, Nepal currently has 102 major hospitals which are situated in and around major urban areas. This makes it challenging for the rural population to have access to urgent healthcare needs. Due to this, the nursing profession in Nepal has been one that has not been focused upon for a long time. However, with the increasing development in the healthcare infrastructure of the country,  several new medical institutions have sprung up since 2011.  And, this has created a wealth of opportunity for the nursing profession in the country. Besides, the colleges and universities of Nepal have also begun providing quality courses in healthcare and nursing sciences which have further contributed to the development of the nursing profession in Nepal in recent years.

Background of nursing profession in Nepal

Conventionally, the nursing profession in Nepal was practically non-existent. Care for patients was usually provided by housewives and maidservants as a practice that was reminiscent of the royal family traditions of Nepal. During the 1940s to 1980s, Nepali women who were aspiring nurses were usually sent to India to pursue courses in midwifery and upon completion of which they returned to pursue their nursing profession in Nepal. Soon enough many more Nepali women began to migrate to India and enroll themselves in midwifery and nursing courses in some of the most esteemed and renowned colleges and universities of India.

Some Nepali women even bagged international WHO scholarships to help them pursue their dream of establishing their nursing career. In modern-day Nepal, professional nurses stand to earn something in the range of 50,000 Nepalese Rupees to 1,50,000 Nepalese Rupees, depending upon the skills and experience.

Educational infrastructure for Nursing in Nepal

The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) of Nepal began to support the development of the nursing profession in Nepal through its Proficiency Certificate Level in nursing since 1999. And, an established nursing curriculum began to be followed by several universities of the country that were offering opportunities in nursing. There are several private, state-run, and even community colleges and universities in Nepal that offer quality courses in nursing but a persistent issue in most of them is the lack of proper training, the scope for outward exposure, and the possibility of growth in the nursing profession in Nepal.
